THE MEANING OF SYMBOLS IN THE ARCHITECTURAL STYLE OF THE AL-QUR'AN AL-AKBAR IN PALEMBANG CITY(A Semiotic Study by Charles Sanders Pierce)

Abstract

The Al-Qur’an Al-Akbar in Palembang City represents a form of Islamic art that integrates religious values with local cultural elements through architecture and wood carving. This study aims to examine the symbolic meanings embedded in the architectural patterns of Al-Qur’an Al-Akbar. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results indicate that the architectural features reflect both Islamic and Palembang cultural elements, including a dome on the gate, trefoil arches, floral and bamboo shoot (pucuk rebung) motifs, the dominance of golden-yellow color, and elements of the traditional Palembang Rumah Limas. The carvings consist of fern tendril, floral, and bamboo shoot motifs, which symbolically represent protection, loyalty and prosperity, as well as hope and resilience. Overall, Al-Qur’an Al-Akbar not only symbolizes the grandeur of the Holy Qur’an but also reflects the richness of Palembang’s cultural and aesthetic values.
