Abstract
Interpersonal communication between parents and children is an important factor in preventing school dropout in rural communities. This study analyzes parent-child interpersonal communication patterns and the supporting and inhibiting factors in Jorong II Tanjuang Baringin Utara, Lubuk Sikaping. The study used a descriptive qualitative field approach. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving ten purposively selected informants. The data were analyzed through condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing with source, observer, and theory triangulation. The findings show that effective communication is marked by openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality. Democratic communication helps maintain children's learning motivation, while permissive communication tends to weaken educational control
