Focus and Scope The Journal of Environmental Communication and Ethnic Studies (JECES) is a premier, international, double-blind peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing pioneering, interdisciplinary knowledge at the critical intersection of environmental communication, ethnicity, culture, religion, and sustainability science. Serving as a rigorous global epistemological forum, JECES publishes high-quality empirical research, innovative theoretical frameworks, advanced methodological papers, and comprehensive critical reviews. The journal examines how multifaceted communication processes, cultural identities, religious values, and social institutions influence ecological awareness, environmental citizenship, community resilience, and sustainable development.
JECES aims to catalyze the development of transformative theories and practices capable of deconstructing the complex configurations between contemporary ecological crises, media ecosystems, ethnic diversity, and socio-cultural transformations. A central mission of the journal is to decenter Western-centric sustainability discourses by amplifying Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), local wisdom, indigenous sovereignty, and faith-based perspectives, with a distinctive (but not exclusive) emphasis on multicultural, Islamic, Malay, and Global South contexts.
To facilitate international academic exchanges that bridge communication humanities, cultural studies, religious studies, environmental governance, and sustainability science, JECES welcomes original submissions within the following core thematic areas:
- Environmental Communication, Media, and Discourse: Critical analysis of climate change communication, environmental journalism, public relations, digital media activism, and strategic communication frameworks as drivers of public engagement, policy formation, and pro-environmental behavior change.
- Ethnicity, Cultural Pluralism, and Sustainability: Scholarly inquiry into how ethnic identities, cultural heritage, social stratification, and intercultural dynamics intersect with sustainable development goals, environmental resource management, and ecological adaptation.
- Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) & Indigenous Wisdom: Empirical and theoretical evaluations of indigenous cosmologies, local eco-wisdom, and traditional community-based practices in mitigating climate vulnerability and fostering ecological resilience.
- Religion, Islamic Thought, and Spiritual Ecology: Exploration of the convergence between religious traditions and environmental ethics, focusing on Islamic environmental philosophy, green shariah, faith-based climate actions, religious communication, and spiritual stewardship (khalifah).
- Environmental Justice, Governance, and Social Inclusion: Critical dialogues surrounding climate justice, environmental racism, socio-ecological vulnerabilities, inclusive environmental policy, and grassroots, community-driven sustainability initiatives.
- Comparative and Transnational Global South Studies: Cross-cultural, comparative, and decolonial research from underrepresented geopolitical regions designed to enrich global understanding of human-nature-culture interactions.
Ultimately, JECES aspires to be a leading international forum for cutting-edge scholarship that demonstrates how communication, ethnicity, culture, religion, and localized perspectives can synergistically contribute to building environmentally sustainable, socially just, and culturally resilient societies worldwide.
