JMIS was established to address academic needs in showcasing the institutional strengths of Raden Fatah State Islamic University Palembang through international publications. The journal first appeared in June 2017 in both electronic and printed formats, focusing on social issues and religious diversity within Islamic societies, particularly in the Malay world encompassing Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and Southern Thailand.

JMIS encompasses interdisciplinary studies that deeply examine Islam in the Southeast Asian region, emphasizing theological, legal, educational, cultural, and socio-dynamic aspects of Malay Muslim societies. It explores both traditional themes such as fiqh and Islamic history, as well as contemporary issues like Sharia economics, women’s rights, and religious pluralism. Through a multidisciplinary approach, JMIS aims to serve as an academic dialogue platform between local and global Islamic thought, enriching perspectives on the unique and dynamic Islamic landscape in the Malay world.

As a reputable journal, JMIS holds Level 4 (Sinta 4) accreditation under the Decree of the Ministry of Education and Culture No. 36/E/KPT/2019, ensuring rigorous editorial processes and scientific quality.
