ABSTRACT
The low learning competency of students is caused by several problems found in the learning process, including because learning is still teacher-centered. Learning in this way causes the learning competence of students to be low. One of the efforts that can be done to improve students' learning competence is to apply cooperative learning models with the Talking Stick method. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of cooperative learning models with the Talking Stick method on the learning competencies of students about the material structure and function of Class VIII plant tissue at SMPN 2 Payakumbuh.This type of research is an experimental study with a posttest only design control group research design. The population of this study was all students of Class VIII at SMPN 2 Payakumbuh in the academic year 2019/2020. Sampling using a purposing sampling technique, which was selected as a research sample was Class VIII.6 as the control class and VIII.8 as the experimental class. The instrument used was a posttest about knowledge competencies, an observation sheet for attitude competencies and skills. Data analysis techniques used in this study were normality test, homogeneity test data, and hypothesis test data with t-test. Based on the results of the study of students' knowledge competency obtained tcount value of 3.38> t table 1.67, the attitude competency value of t count 2.03> t table 1.67, and the skill competency value of t count 2.72> t table 1.67. This shows that the hypothesis is accepted. It can be concluded that the application of cooperative learning models with the Talking Stick method has a positive effect on student learning competencies at SMPN 2 Payakumbuh
