Abstract

This article aims to elaborate on the concept of Islamization according to S.M. Naquib al-Attas, including its historical background and the stages of its implementation process, and to relate it to the concept of Islamic education by exploring the relevance of his educational thought. This study is considered important due to the dominance of the secular Western worldview in the Islamic education system, which al-Attas regards as the root cause of the crisis of adab and the deviation in educational objectives. Using a library research method with documentation techniques and a descriptive-analytical approach, this study finds that S.M. Naquib al-Attas offers an integral and holistic framework of Islamic education, known as the concept of ta’dib. This concept emphasizes the close relationship between knowledge and action, which al-Attas views as essential components in the perfection of one’s educational journey. From his perspective, education is not merely a formal activity confined to classrooms but a comprehensive process of character formation that integrates the spiritual, intellectual, and moral dimensions of a person. Al-Attas’s thought thus makes a significant contribution to the development of a more comprehensive and contextual paradigm of Islamic education, capable of addressing the epistemological challenges faced by the Muslim ummah in the modern era.
