Abstract

This article is the result of research conducted in order to answer problems related to the discourse that occurred in Liberal Islamic thought in Indonesia, both at the beginning of its emergence, its development during the period 1980 to 2010. This study uses qualitative research methods with sources derived from the literature. The approach used by the author is historical and sociological. From the results of this study, it is known that the development of rational Islamic thought has emerged in the Khulaffaurrasydin era, as a response to differences of opinion among Muslims at the end of the tenure of Caliph Ali bin Abi Talib which resulted in the birth of a theological school in Islamic thought. The reconnection of the West and the East through colonialism and imperialism encouraged the rebirth of rational thought in Islam. The birth of Liberal Islamic thought in Indonesia was motivated by several figures who developed this thought as a result of their study in the Western world. Where they have the same educational background, which is from the Western world. In addition, the challenges of modernization faced by Muslims have also contributed to the development of this thought. Post-reform Liberal Islamic thought is increasingly recognized, namely after the establishment of an organization that becomes a forum for movement and renewal by carrying out its agenda and actions to the community in Indonesia.
