Publication Ethics
The Editors of the Journal of Mathematics and Science Education (abbreviated as J. Math. Sci. Edu.) issue a set of publication ethics as guidelines for authors engaged in the publication of scientific research. These guidelines are aligned with COPE practices and aim to establish a high-quality standard of ethics for journal publication.
A. Authorship
Authors are expected to comply with the following ethical guidelines. Any infringement may lead to the retraction of the article or may result in banning the author from further publication in this journal.
1. The author’s main obligation is to provide accurate and complete details of the research conducted. The research data should contain sufficient information relevant to the subject matter.
2. Authors should ensure the originality of their work and that no fraud or fabrication is involved in the manuscript.
3. Authors must guarantee that the article has not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.
4. Authors must ensure that their work does not contain any unlawful statements or any content that may violate the law.
5. Authors are expected to be aware of and abide by the misconduct policy described in this section.
B. Editorship
1. Editors must provide fair judgment and consideration to all manuscripts based on their quality, without regard to race, religion, nationality, sex, seniority, or institutional affiliation of the author(s).
2. Editors are responsible for considering all submitted manuscripts within a reasonable time frame.
3. Based on their expertise and fair judgment, editors are responsible for accepting or rejecting manuscripts. They should maintain effective communication with authors regarding the publication process. The final decision will be accompanied by reviewers’ comments.
4. Editors must ensure that no private information about authors is included in the manuscript sent to reviewers.
5. Editors must maintain the confidentiality of the submitted manuscript and must not disclose any information about the manuscript under consideration to any third party.
6. Editors are expected to respect the author’s request to exclude certain reviewers — provided there is a well-reasoned objection. However, editors may still assign such reviewers if their professional input is deemed essential.
7. Editors are required to comply with COPE practices when considering manuscripts for publication.
C. Reviewer Process
All papers will be critically reviewed by at least two anonymous reviewers selected for their expertise in the subject area of the manuscript. Acceptance will depend on the scientific merit and relevance to the Journal of Mathematics and Science Education. A paper may be accepted as submitted, accepted with revisions, or rejected.
Reviewers’ and editors’ suggestions will be forwarded to the author, who will then have the opportunity to revise the manuscript. A manuscript returned for revision must be resubmitted within eight weeks.
Accepted papers will be edited by native English speakers. The cost of language editing is included in the Article Processing Charge (APC).
All submitted papers will be screened for originality using Turnitin.
Reviewers must adhere to the following ethical guidelines:
1. The primary obligation of a reviewer is to objectively evaluate the manuscript in terms of scientific quality and language accuracy.
2. Reviewers must treat the submitted manuscript as a confidential document.
3. Reviewer identity should remain anonymous unless editors decide otherwise.
4. Reviewers must complete their evaluations within a reasonable time frame and notify editors if they are unable to do so.
5. Reviewers must provide adequate and professional justification for their assessments.
6. Reviewers must notify the editors promptly if they believe the manuscript poses a risk to public health or safety due to potential misuse.
D. Conflict of Interest Policy
Authors, editors, and reviewers must adhere to the following ethical standards, in line with COPE guidelines:
1. Authors must clearly state their sources of financial support — institutional, private, or corporate — for the research.
2. If an author and an editor have a relationship that could result in a conflict of interest, another editor will be assigned to handle the manuscript.
3. Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest and, if necessary, return the manuscript without review.
E. Data and Responsibility
Data availability and reporting guidelines are provided in the 'Author Guidelines' section.
F. Research Misconduct Policy
This policy aims to prevent research misconduct and outlines principles and procedures related to research integrity.
Scope of Misconduct:
Research misconduct includes, but is not limited to:
1. Fabrication — the creation of false information or data.
2. Falsification — manipulation of research materials, processes, or data that misrepresents results.
3. Plagiarism — use of others’ work, ideas, or results without proper citation.
4. Improper authorship — listing individuals who did not contribute significantly, or excluding those who did.
Intentional disruption of investigations into one’s own or others’ misconduct.
1. Unfair evaluations or unauthorized disclosure of research during the peer review process.
2. Other egregious actions that violate the norms of scientific and academic conduct.
Journal’s Response to Misconduct:
Editors and publishers have an ethical duty to:
1. Maintain the integrity of the peer-review process.
2. Correct the scientific record when necessary.
3. Educate and prevent future misconduct.
Allegations will be investigated according to established procedures, possibly involving institutional or funding agencies.
Possible Sanctions:
1. Before publication — The manuscript may be withdrawn from consideration.
2. After publication — A retraction, editorial note, or correction may be issued, and the article marked accordingly.
Editors will determine whether to retract or correct the article based on the severity and intent of the misconduct.
1. Authors found guilty may be barred from future submissions.
2. Editors may inform other journals or publishers, if appropriate.
3. The journal may publish an editorial to raise awareness of the issue.
G. Ethical Oversight
All communication between authors and editors is considered confidential and may not be shared without permission. Authors' names and email addresses will be used solely for journal purposes and will not be disclosed to third parties.
