Abstract

This article discusses the obligation, objectives (maqashid), and dispensation (rukhsah) of fasting during Ramadan as explained in the Qur'an, using a comparative tafsir approach between Fakhruddin al-Razi and Musthafa al-Maraghi. The study employs the tafsir muqaran method to analyze the differences in interpretation of surah al-Baqarah verses 183-185 by these two scholars. The findings of the study are as follows: First, the obligation of fasting in the Qur'an was revealed in two stages. The first stage explains the obligation of fasting for previous nations on specific days (QS. al-Baqarah: 183-184), while the second stage establishes the obligation of fasting during the month of Ramadan (QS. al-Baqarah: 185). Al-Maraghi interprets the phrase ayyāmam ma’dūdāt as referring to the month of Ramadan, whereas al-Razi offers two interpretations: mandatory fasting beyond Ramadan and fasting in Ramadan with the explanation provided in verse 185. Second, regarding the rukhsah (dispensation) for fasting during Ramadan, al-Maraghi interprets it according to the literal meaning of the verse, while al-Razi provides a broader interpretation, accommodating scholarly opinions, including dispensation for pregnant  and  nursing women. Third, the purpose of rukhsah is to provide ease for those who face difficulties in performing the fast, and to instill gratitude for the blessing of this dispensation.
