STUNTING JOURNALISTIC PHOTO ANALYSIS BY ABRIANSYAH LIBERTO

Abstract

This research is entitled "Analysis of Stunting Journalistic Photos by Abriansyah Liberto". The formulation of the problem discussed in this thesis is the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth as seen from Roland Barthes' semiotic method in a photo by photographer Abriansyah Liberto regarding the development of stunting occurring in Indonesia which was selected as the best photo essay in the general news category at the Indonesian Photo Pewarta Award (Anugerah Pewarta Foto Indonesia) (APFI) in 2023. The aim of this research is to find out the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth in stunting photos by Abriasnyah Liberto. The research method used in this research is a qualitative research method. The data collection technique uses direct observation by observing and collecting stunting photos by Abriansyah Liberto. Interviews were carried out by asking questions directly to the relevant parties, namely Abriansyah Liberto as the photographer, as well as documentation to view important documents and data related to the researcher's problems. The number of photos analyzed in this research was nine photos. These photos were analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory which found results in the form of denotational meanings that describe the circumstances, behavior, actions and attitudes that occur in the photos. Then no connotation stage regarding the Trick Effect (Photo Manipulation) was found. So it can be ascertained the authenticity and truthfulness of the nine photos by Abriansyah Liberto in accordance with photojournalism rules. And the meaning of myth describes reality, sadness, resignation, and the situation of truth that occurs.
