Ethnomathematics: Exploring Mathematical Concepts in the Art of Lenggang Nyai Dance

Abstract

Mathematics and culture are two things that are closely related to people's lives. The Lenggang Nyai dance is an art that has been acculturated by Betawi and Chinese culture. This research uses a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data collection techniques are observation and literature study. Observations were carried out by observing the movement patterns of the Lenggang Nyai dance through documentation from various sources. The sources studied were two videos of dancers dancing the Lenggang Nyai dance which were uploaded on two different YouTube channels by Diana Rosca and Sanggar Citra Budaya. The ethnomathematics exploration of the Lenggang Nyai dance that was studied was the geometric concept in the movements and clothing. In the Lenggang Nyai dance movements, the concepts of lines, angles, two dimensions and transformation are found. In the clothing and accessories of the Lenggang Nyai dance there are concepts of folding symmetry, two dimensions, transformation, and arithmetic sequences and series.
