Abstract

This article discusses the interpretation of Mahmud Yunus's work, namely Qur'an Karim, as the pioneer of the first commentary writing using Indonesian in the 21st century. This commentary is widely used by the public as the main reference because it contains values ​​that are different from other interpretations. The main problem is how the background of this interpretation was written, what style, method, source of interpretation, and what values ​​are contained in Karim's interpretation of the Qur'an. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive method based on library research. The primary source for this research is Karim's interpretation of the Qur'an. The research results obtained are in the form of background for writing tafsir, using scientific style, adabi ijtima'i, sourced from two combinations of bil ma'tsur and bi ra'yi, unique characteristics of interpretation which are accompanied by tafsir conclusions. The uniqueness of Mahmud Yunus's interpretation can be seen from the way the interpretation is presented which emphasizes the lexical meaning of verses, for example in Surah al-Qadr, while the form of novelty in this interpretation can be seen in the conclusion section where Mahmud Yunus includes elements of modernity, one of which is in terms of science and morals.
